Octopus Hat

Time to try catching up on my posts. It is always a fine balance between doing things and writing about them. This is a hat that I knit recently for a little 2YO friend. I paired it with this book about an octopus who is clever enough to escape from his enclosure.

The pattern is called Have You Seen My Octopus? by Katie Pomper and is available on Ravelry. It has directions for sizes for infants through adults.

The yarn I chose is Lion Brand Heartland in colors Glacier Bay and Grand Canyon. It is a worsted weight yarn (4).

Although the hat is cute in weird colors, I wanted something more realistic. I like this yarn because both the ocean and the octopus have rich, varying colors. These yarns reflect that.

The chart shows two legs and repeats 4 times around the hat giving the correct number of legs, eight. I placed markers to help keep me on track as the legs curl around in an unpredictable way. I had to pay attention and I think there is only one wrong stitch. I’m pretty sure the 2YO won’t notice.

The large pompom on top represents the body of the octopus. I used the 4″ Clover pompom maker.

I wasn’t sure the little guy would know much about his octopus so I included this book. I hope he likes it and always thinks of Inky when he wears it.

I hope you like the octopus hat. It was a fun and quick project. I have more than half of each skein left so I see another hat in my future.

As always, your polite and helpful comments are welcome.
